Steamboat passenger service in the Capital Region ran as late as 1948, so lots of folks still remember the days of steamboat travel in the area.

Post your memories here.

Share your stories of river commuting here, too. Did you used to commute by Staten Island Ferry? Let us know what that was like. What do you think about river commuting?

I may want to publish excerpts from your posts in the booklet that passengers will receive during the Dutch Apple Hudson River Commute, so please leave your name and location. Have fun!

I'm trying to commute between the Rensselaer boat launch and downtown Troy with my kayak. I made a couple of test runs last summer that got me as far as the South Troy bridge, but I keep running out of time and daylight. I will persevere, however. There is the problem of finding a decent place to take out in Troy. Someone told me behind Bella Napoli Bakery -? I work right downtown in Troy, and the river is awesome. On one trip a bald eagle landed on a high tree branch, ate a fish, and preened itself as I watched below. Then it turned its back and ignored me. All while traffic whizzed by on I-90 a hundred yards away.  I feel like Huck Finn out there.
