I'm trying to commute between the Rensselaer boat launch and downtown Troy with my kayak. I made a couple of test runs last summer that got me as far as the South Troy bridge, but I keep running out of time and daylight. I will persevere, however. There is the problem of finding a decent place to take out in Troy. Someone told me behind Bella Napoli Bakery -? I work right downtown in Troy, and the river is awesome. On one trip a bald eagle landed on a high tree branch, ate a fish, and preened itself as I watched below. Then it turned its back and ignored me. All while traffic whizzed by on I-90 a hundred yards away.  I feel like Huck Finn out there.

Skip Parsons will be playing jazz music on the after-work cruise.

I asked him if he had any memories of riding the steamboats in Albany when he was young. Here's what he said:

Quote
I remember riding the Alexander Hamilton as a wee youngster. My Mother's family lived in Hudson at the time and we went there by steamboat. But only a couple of times. I had not realized at the time how exciting it must have been. As barely a grade schooler then, I guess we thought it would always be a part of life, taking place forever, so we just took it in stride.

Not so.  Guess I should have paid more attention.

When we docked in Hudson there were teen, or older boys who were into diving for coins. Seems the passengers would toss coins overboard as we docked and those kids would head for the bottom of the river to cash in. The river must have been a murky then as now. It's pretty scary today knowing that they were actually under the boat at times....!  My Mom of course knew quite a bit regarding those boats.

Unfortunately there was no riverboat jazz aboard for we patrons at that time. Guess maybe I was a bit late for that. The music was pretty much a part of the Mississippi, since it was a way for the musicians of New Orleans to work their way to Chicago in search of better work.  I believe however, there was some work for bands on the Hudson River Day Line from NYC to Albany prior to my steamboat experiences.

Steamboat passenger service in the Capital Region ran as late as 1948, so lots of folks still remember the days of steamboat travel in the area.

Post your memories here.

Share your stories of river commuting here, too. Did you used to commute by Staten Island Ferry? Let us know what that was like. What do you think about river commuting?

I may want to publish excerpts from your posts in the booklet that passengers will receive during the Dutch Apple Hudson River Commute, so please leave your name and location. Have fun!

There are no current plans to allow bicycles on board the Dutch Apple. However, if enough people express interest in bicycling to the boat, there may be an organization willing to shuttle your bikes between the two cities.

This discussion thread is for those who might be interested in bicycling to the boat. Post a message if you might be interested in bicycling to the boat so we can keep track of the interest level.
